Native trees, grown locally

At All Green Nursery & Garden, we know the benefit of having local products. That's why we propagate and grow our native trees in a dedicated native tree nursery in Melbourne. All of our species are selected and grown for their ability to thrive in local soil.

Growing conditions and soil can vary widely from region to region. Your native plants from All Green are especially hardy to handle the dry heat of summer, and the damp, chilly winter. If you have any questions about native trees and how they can best prosper in your yard, give us a call. Our customer service team will be happy to help.

How do I care for native trees?

Native trees don't need much in the way of care, outside of routine pruning and watering. There should be more than enough nutrients in the local soil to support them. However, it would be best if you mulched in the winter months. A layer of mulch around the base of the tree insulates the roots from cold, and slowly decomposes, releasing vital nutrients into the soil.

What are some good native trees to start with?

Native trees boast the dual benefit of being incredibly hardy and also very aesthetically pleasing. Here are some of our favourite native plants to grow in homes around Melbourne. We've focused on fast-growing trees so you can start enjoying them at full size sooner.

  • Lemon-scented gum (Corymbia citriodora) is a tall, slender gum tree with a pleasant lemon smell.
  • Blueberry ash (Elaeocarpus reticulatus) is an excellent fast-grower, is evergreen, and attracts birds with beautiful flowers.
  • Water gum (Tristaniopsis laurina) is a rainforest regular, and benefits from regular watering in summer.
  • C. ficifolia' Summer Beauty' produces stunning pink flowers in summer, and are compact, perfect for smaller gardens.

How do I start planting native trees in my garden?

As with most varieties of plants, great growth starts with good soil. Read our resource about Melbourne's unique soil content, and find out what you can do to improve your garden's soil in preparation for planting a native tree.

Here are some key tips when planting native trees in your front or back garden:

  • Plant them in the cooler months of the year, preferably around times of high rainfall.
  • Dig a deep hole so that the roots grow away from surface heat and plant part of the trunk.
  • Water well in summer and mulch regularly in winter to protect from the elements.
  • Regularly prune the tips of branches to ensure robust and healthy growth throughout the year.
