Find the right fit for your space

Choosing your look

Decorative pebbles can completely change the look and feel of a space. Lighter stones help brighten shaded areas, darker tones create contrast, and mixed natural finishes add texture and softness around plants and pathways. Smaller pebbles give a neat, compact look, while larger stones create more visual impact and definition.

If you’re unsure which option will work best, visiting in person allows you to compare colour, size, and texture before committing. You can also explore our display areas or larger feature rocks for inspiration.

Preparing your base

For pathways, borders, and higher-traffic areas, decorative pebbles are often installed over a prepared base. A compacted gravel layer can improve drainage and stability, while sand may be used to help level the surface before stone is laid.

Choosing the right preparation helps prevent movement and creates a cleaner finish.

Frequently asked questions

What size pebbles should I choose?

Decorative pebbles typically range from around 7mm to larger feature sizes. Smaller pebbles are great for garden beds, pots, and areas where you want a neat, compact finish, while larger stones create more impact and work well for borders, feature zones, or spaces where movement is minimal.

If you’re looking for something even larger to anchor a space, it may be worth exploring our feature rocks as well.

How many pebbles do I need per square metre?

How much you’ll need depends on the pebble size and how deep you plan to lay them. Larger stones generally need a bit more depth to achieve full coverage and stop movement.

As a rough guide, the following bulk volumes cover about 1m²:

• 50mm depth = approx. 0.05m³

• 75mm depth = approx. 0.075m³

• 100mm depth = approx. 0.10m³

• 150mm depth = approx. 0.15m³

If you’re unsure, feel free to bring in your measurements or get in touch, and we can help work it out.

Where do you source your garden rocks?

Most of our decorative pebbles and garden stone come from trusted Victorian quarries and suppliers, helping ensure consistent quality and materials suited to local conditions. We also prioritise responsible sourcing wherever possible and work with suppliers who follow sustainable quarrying practices.

What should you put down before laying garden pebbles?

For garden beds, weed matting is often used beneath pebbles to help reduce weeds and keep stones from mixing into the soil. For pathways or areas with more foot traffic, a compacted gravel base can improve stability and drainage, while sand may help level uneven ground before installation.

The preparation really depends on where the pebbles are going and how the space will be used.

Can I put pebbles directly on soil?

You can place pebbles directly on soil in low-traffic garden beds, but weed matting is usually recommended to help manage weeds and keep the stones looking clean over time. For pathways or areas where movement is likely, adding a compacted base will create a more stable and longer-lasting finish.

If you’re unsure what preparation your project needs, our team is always happy to help.
