Frequently asked questions

Why do I need sleepers?

Sleepers are an essential element in creating a raised garden bed or retaining wall. Raised areas of your garden allow for more growing room and create interesting levels that draw the eye to particular parts of your garden. Raised garden beds built from sleepers:

  • Promote better water retention for sandy soils
  • Permit better drainage for clay-based soils
  • Offer a raised barrier from pests and weeds
  • Make gardening easier on your joints

Retaining walls are also an excellent use for sleepers. First built by humans on the ancient terraces of Peru's Sacred Valley, retaining walls keep dirt and plants at bay, allowing you to compartmentalise your outdoor areas over different levels.

Retaining walls can also:

  • Create more flat, usable land
  • Manage and direct water runoff
  • Provide extra seating when entertaining
  • Offer more opportunities for garden decor

Buying sleepers is the first step toward any of these projects. Visit All Green in-store if you've got a sleeper project in mind. Our expert staff will be able to advise you on products and methods that will get you the result you want.

What are sleepers made from?

All Green's selection of sleepers is made from a range of organic and inorganic materials. The most popular and least expensive style of sleepers comes in timber. Choose the graded timber that suits your needs and budget. We stock aa grade railway sleepers, treated pine sleepers and more. Concrete sleepers also provide a stylish, modern solution to your garden bed and retainer wall needs.

  • Ecowood sleepers are perfect for gardens and yards in any area. They are made from treated pine and are entirely free from arsenic. These sleepers come in a range of lengths, from 1.8m to 3.0m, and in thicknesses ranging from 50mm to 75mm.
  • Concrete sleepers come in a huge variety of styles, including Bluestone Grey, Charcoal, Exposed, and Stackstone. For posterity, they come with an internal reinforcing bar and are available in lengths of 1.8m and thicknesses of 70mm to 75mm.

We also stock a range of corner posts, end posts, joiner posts, and stakes. All of our products are guaranteed to stand the test of time and will provide you with a garden bed or retaining wall as long as you require.

What should I consider before buying sleepers?

A retaining wall or raised garden bed is a reasonably substantial project that will change the landscape of your yard. Therefore, it's important to consider exactly what you want to achieve when installing sleeper walls.

For raised garden beds, you should take into account the following:

  • Consider where your garden bed will be positioned and how much sun, shade, and rain it will receive.
  • Test the ground around the area. Softer ground is much more malleable than harder ground.
  • Ensure that you have the correct soil, potting mix, and fertiliser for what you wish to plant.

For retaining walls, you should consider several things, including:

  • What is the style of your home and garden? This will affect what materials you should buy.
  • Keep an eye out for erosion around your property. A retaining wall is a great preventative measure.
  • Water can add significant pressure to a retaining wall, so ensure there is a provision for drainage.

If you have any questions about sleepers and their application, visit All Green, call our customer service team, or send us an enquiry online.
