Find the right lawn turf for your space

Turf for every Melbourne garden

Different lawn varieties perform differently depending on sunlight, foot traffic, and water availability. Buffalo grasses are often a great fit for family backyards thanks to their soft leaf and shade tolerance, while couch varieties are popular for sunny, high-use areas that need strong wear recovery. Kikuyu is a hardy, fast-growing option for larger spaces with a premium finish.

Preparing for fresh turf

A healthy lawn starts below the surface. Before laying fresh turf, you’ll need to clear the area, level the ground, and prepare a quality base so the turf can establish properly.

Start with the right lawn soil or sandy loam to create an even growing layer, then work through compost if the existing ground needs a nutrient boost. Once the surface is level, turf sand can help with final levelling and drainage before your lawn squares go down. We also stock fertilisers and lawn care products to help your new turf settle in and keep growing well.

Frequently asked questions

Which natural turf variety is right for my Melbourne garden?

We stock four proven natural turf varieties suited to Melbourne's climate:

  • Sir Walter DNA Certified Buffalo turf is plush, resilient, and grown to handle part shade and family foot traffic.
  • Eureka Kikuyu is fast-growing and full sun-loving, ideal for large open areas.
  • TifTuf turf has a dense growth with fine leaves, well-suited to dry summers and active backyards.

How do I prepare the ground before laying natural turf?

Start by removing any existing grass, weeds, or debris. Loosen the top 100 to 150mm of soil, then level and firm the surface before laying. Pair with a quality turf underlay, lawn soil or soil conditioner, and starter fertiliser to help roots establish quickly and give your instant turf the best possible start.

Does All Green deliver lawn turf across Melbourne?

Yes, All Green delivers natural turf across Melbourne and surrounding suburbs. Delivery availability, lead times, and pricing vary depending on the type of turf, order size, time of year, and your location.

How much turf do I need?

Measure the length and width of your space in metres and multiply them together to get your square metreage. It's worth adding around 5–10% extra to account for cuts and edges. Not sure? Our team can help you work it out before you order.

What do I need to lay turf?

Before laying, you'll need to clear the area of weeds and debris, then prepare a base of at least 100mm of well-worked soil. A starter fertiliser helps new roots establish quickly. We also carry lawn rollers, shovels, tape measures, wheelbarrows, and all the supplies you need to get the job done.

Browse our lawn supplies online or ask our team what's right for your project.

How do I keep my new lawn healthy?

For the first 1-3 weeks, water deeply every day, or twice daily if temperatures exceed 28°C and keep foot traffic to a minimum. From weeks 3- 6, check that roots have taken hold by gently lifting a corner, then reduce watering to 2 - 3 times per week until fully established.
