Frequently asked questions

Which wattle species should I get?

We have over 1,000 varieties of wattle shrubs in Australia, so we can pretty much guarantee there's a wattle out there that's perfect for your project. Our favourite wattle species include:

  • Rough wattle: A small spreading shrub which grows up to 2 metres tall. It flowers bright yellow, from July to November and is native to New South Wales and Victoria.
  • Gold-dust wattle: Flowers in small globular heads which appear in a deeper yellow hue than other wattle varieties. It's moderately frost-resistant and suitable for gardens in south-east Australia.
  • Box-leaved wattle: This small shrub is a little rough around the edges but produces beautiful flowers in spring. It makes a great screening hedge, when grown closely together with other plants.
  • Hairy wattle: Sprouts 1 to 2 cm long, hairy leaves and globular flowers. Blooms in September and October.
  • Elephant ear wattle: Open shrub which grows up to 6 metres tall. The leaves are the largest of wattle varieties, growing up to 45 cm long and 30 cm wide.
  • Gossamer wattle: Growing up to 8 metres tall, the leaves are between 5 to 12 cm long and 1 to 3 cm wide. The flowers form in spikes, 3 to 8 cm long and golden yellow between June and August.
  • Silky wattle: Also growing up to 8 metres tall, this shrub sprouts leaves shaped like lances, and the flowers grow in spikes similar to the gossamer wattle. It's suitable for tropical and subtropical regions, and provides great shade.

How long do wattles live for?

Most varieties of wattle survive for up to 20 years, with a few exceptions. The boree wattle and blackwood wattle both live for longer than 200 years. To find out exactly how long your plant will last for, chat with our friendly team when you visit our nursery.
