Locally blended

Each blend is designed to support airflow, drainage, and steady moisture through a balanced mix of organic materials and conditioners, including wetting agents to reduce dry spots and slow-release fertiliser for sustained nutrition.

It can also be paired with compost to boost nutrients or finished with mulch to help retain moisture in containers and raised beds.

Choosing your potting mix

The right blend depends on what you’re growing. All-purpose mixes suit most indoor and outdoor plants, while premium options support longer-lasting growth with added nutrients. For best results, use a pot with good drainage, loosen any circling roots, and plant at the same depth as before. Water thoroughly after planting to help it settle.

Your frequently asked questions

What is in the potting mix?

Potting mix is generally made from a blend of organic materials and conditioners designed to support plant growth in pots and containers. These blends typically include composted bark or organic matter for structure, along with ingredients that help manage drainage, moisture retention, and nutrient availability.

Our All Green Potting Mix is blended in-house using a balanced mix of materials, along with wetting agents to help water absorb evenly and slow-release fertiliser for steady, long-term nutrition. Premium options like Grow Better Premium Potting Mix and Searles Premium Organic Potting Mix offer additional nutrients or organic inputs, depending on your preference and what you’re growing.

What's the difference between potting soil and potting mix?

The key difference is where and how they’re used. Potting mix is designed for containers, where plants rely entirely on the mix for water, nutrients, and airflow. It’s lighter and more free-draining, which helps prevent roots from becoming waterlogged.

Garden soil is heavier and better suited to in-ground planting, where it provides structure and long-term support across larger areas. Using garden soil in pots and containers can lead to compaction and poor drainage over time.

For containers and raised garden beds, potting mix or a specialised option like our Planter Bed Mix will give more reliable results.

What is the best potting mix for citrus plants?

Citrus plants grown in pots need a well-draining, nutrient-rich mix that supports both root health and fruit production. A premium blend with added fertiliser is ideal, as citrus are heavy feeders and benefit from a steady nutrient supply.

Our All Green Potting Mix is a reliable option for citrus in containers, while Grow Better Premium Potting Mix provides additional nutrients for longer-lasting performance. For best results, plant in a pot with good drainage and avoid letting water sit around the roots.

What potting mix should I use for indoor plants and succulents?

Most indoor plants grow well in a balanced mix that holds moisture without becoming too dense, helping maintain healthy roots in lower-light environments. Succulents, however, need a freer-draining blend to prevent excess moisture.

Our All Green Potting Mix works well for a wide range of indoor plants. For succulents, it can still be used when paired with a pot that has excellent drainage and a more controlled watering routine. If you’re not sure, our team can help you choose based on your plant type and space.

How much potting mix do I need for my pots or planters?

The amount you’ll need depends on the size and number of containers you’re filling. As a general guide, a standard 30L bag will fill one large pot or several smaller pots, depending on their depth.

For larger setups, such as multiple planters or raised garden beds, bulk potting mix is often more practical and cost-effective. We can help you estimate the right volume based on your measurements, so you can order with confidence and avoid running short.

What potting mix should I use for a Vegepod or raised planter?

Vegepods and raised planters need a high-quality, well-draining mix that can hold moisture while supporting consistent plant growth. Because these systems are self-contained, the growing medium plays a bigger role in supplying nutrients and maintaining structure over time.

Our Vegepod Potting Mix is designed specifically for these setups, helping create the right balance of drainage, moisture retention, and nutrient support. For larger raised beds or planter boxes, our Planter Bed Mix can also be used to provide a more stable, long-lasting base.
