Both potting mix and fertiliser are useful for potted plants or container gardens.
Potting mix is essentially the soil that the potted plants grow within. It needs to have the correct consistency and nutrient profile to aid plant growth and allow newly planted plants to become established.
Planting potted plants in a potting mix rather than using soil ensures that the plants have all of the nutrients that they need to thrive and develop their root system. Be sure to choose a potting mix that is suitable for the particular potted plant as all of the nutrients the plant needs have to come from the soil contained within the pot.
Plant fertiliser is a concentrated nutrient source, usually containing higher doses of nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium. It can consist of animal waste or manufactured commercially. Newly planted roots or shrubs don't generally require fertiliser, but as plants become established, it can increase the health and vitality of the plants.
The 'red tick' emblem on a bag or container of potting mix indicates that the product complies with the Australian Standards. The Australian Standards are an accreditation process that guarantees the quality of the soil mix.
Potting mixes that comply with the Australian Standard AS 3743 will support plant growth for at least three months. It's certified as being suitable to germinate seeds, grow seedlings, strike cuttings and maintain plant growth.
Certified premium potting mixes will have a higher soluble nitrogen content, sustaining plant growth for at least a month without added fertiliser. Premium certified potting mix will also hold water better than regular certified potting mix.
Organically certified potting mixes are free from inorganic materials and are suitable for growing organically certified produce. Organic potting mixes may not carry the Australian Standards accreditation.
Soils labelled as 'organic' may not be organically certified. These products contain a high percentage of organic matter but haven't been through the certification process to determine that they are 100% organic.
